Conversations with Turkey's Career Pioneers – Berna Tanverdi

Tarih:  Date

The last guest of December was the Founder of BT Architecture Berna Tanverdi. Ms. Berna Tanverdi briefly presented herself and the profession of architecture. She specified the importance of taking on responsibilities even as a student, the stress you are under during the project presentations in front of a jury and added that in architecture there are no working hours.

Ms. Tanverdi mentioned that architecture is a learnable profession which can not be only connected to the talent for drawing. She also stressed that architecture requires deep investigation, experimentation and being sophisticated. She mentioned that architecture is open to collaboration with other disciplines which helps one to develop professionally.

Ms. Tanverdi answered the questions of the students and explained the difference between architecture and interior architecture and added that post-graduate study is an obligation for those who wish to stay in the academy.

She also explained that in the architectural competitions, the projects are evaluated with the name of the contestant closed which allows to judge only the quality of the presented project and gives chance to unknown architects to prove themselves.
Ms. Tanverdi also gave examples from her own career and revealed the different professional options of architecture.

Answering the questions, Ms. Tanverdi mentioned that she loved the simplicity of Anıtkabir and the edifice of METU Faculty of Architecture. She strongly recommended the students to visit the citadel of Ankara and experience the Erasmus program in order to explore different architectural styles.

Ms. Tanverdi stated that architecture has a spatial and temporal flexibility, that team-work is difficult but necessary in architecture and also mentioned that inter-disciplinary explorations are very enjoyable. She stressed that the students are not urged to make professional choices upon their graduation, that they will have the time to discover their preferences. She ended the conversation by stating that architecture challenges social life but also nourishes from it and teaches time management.
Following the conversation Ms. Tanverdi gave an interview at RadioTEDU.
