Conversations with Turkey's Career Pioneers – Nebi Sümer

The second guest of December was METU Department of Psychology, Faculty Member Nebi Sümer. Mr. Sümer began the conversation by introducing himself and he briefly explained his research activities, psychology and its subfields. He specified that psychology is a science which requires an objective, ethical and open-minded attitude. Mr. Sümer also explained in detail the different fields of psychology which students might prefer to pursue following their education.

Mr. Sümer carried on the conversation by talking about the status of the Department of Psychology in Turkey and stated that in our country graduates of a four year long undergraduate program are considered as psychologists whereas it requires an obligatory post-graduate program in other parts of the world. He stressed that in Turkey the psychologists must develop themselves in their area of specialization, complete a masters degree and continue their studies abroad if possible, in order to acquire different perspectives.

After sharing statistical data on education of psychology in Turkey, Mr. Sümer stated that psychology education is highly demanded in our country just like in other developing countries. He also stressed that the graduates of psychology departments can easily find employment in different sectors.

Mr. Sümer mentioned that neuroscience will become prominent in the near future and recommended the students to choose their university according to the quality of its faculty members.

Mr. Sümer also listed the pioneering universities in the field of psychology both in Turkey and abroad, gave examples of reputable foreign universities and stressed that Psychology should not be confused with Psychiatry. He then answered the questions of the students and ended the conversation with sharing his contact details. Following the conversation Mr. Sümer gave an interview at Radio TEDU.
