Conversations with Turkey's Career Pioneers – Süreyya Serdengeçti

The second guest of March in Conversations with Turkey’s Career Pioneers was Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey former President Süreyya Serdengeçti. Mr. Süreyya Serdengeçti, told the students how his career began in Central Bank, that the rules were quiet strict but that all the employees continue their careers in the institution until their retirement. He indicated that he was appointed as the president of the central bank in 2001 during the time of economic crisis and stated that he struggled against the usage of foreign currencies but failed to achieve any positive solutions. Mr. Serdengeçti also explained how the Central Bank affects the market through its statements and communication policies and expressed his astonishment of the people still using the terms million-milliard though 6 zeros were removed from the local currency.

Mr. Serdengeçti clarified why the rate of exchange is so high compared to the past and said that it is hard to make any predictions for the future. He suggested collecting all the savings under the same roof in order to eliminate the risks. He stressed that the instability in Turkey’s foreign policies cause problems in economy and that privatization policy is not sustainable for Turkey. He stated that long term confidentiality and a well-established state of law are essential for creating demand for Turkish Lira.

Mr. Serdengeçti explained that politics was never his cup of tea. He advised the students to always perform what they like, that being happy is more important than earning money. He concluded the conversation by recommending them to be honest and to adopt a broad perspective.
